Volunteer of the Month

Marwan Maru

“It just takes one step to walk over a long distance, every single step and every single person’s effort is needed.”

 
Marwan Maru is a husband, engineer, immigrant and volunteer. He is currently focused on working with the youth program to help improve children’s mathematic and scientific knowledge, as well as critical thinking skills as a volunteer coding tutor at Hakili. He is a dedicated and caring volunteer helping us to make a difference. Thank you, Marwan!

Committees and Working Groups

Economic Mobility Working Group

Holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science (University of Sao Paulo, Brazil) with a focus on participatory socio-ecological modelling. A Master’s degree and development and the environment (Federal University of Paraiba, Brazil) concentrated on sustainable technologies and practices applied in hotels. A bachelor in Tourism, minor: Planning. (Federal University of Paraiba, Brazil).

Parent Advisory Group

Fluent in French, a doctoral assistant at the University of Calgary and a mother. Alida enjoys making a difference in her community through her participation in research and event planning at Hakili. She believes that we all need to do our part in order to make the world a better place. 

A mother of two young boys, an IT Science Engineer and an avid traveller. Judith describes volunteering as a part of who she is and she wants to see parents and children succeed-especially through the coding program and parent cafe. She works hard as a volunteer member of the Parent Advisory Group to help parents feel supported and empowered.

Youth Empowerment Group

A husband, proud immigrant and an engineer. He has worked very hard to be where he is today and he knows first hand what challenges immigrants face when moving to a new place which is why he supports youth through the free computer  coding program.

Operations Group

A university student studying communications at Mount Royal that is striving to give back to her community. Growing up in an underserved community as a minority, she understands the need for children and parents to feel supported and have the resources they need.
