Our story

It all started back in 2016, when we set ourselves on a journey to end the pervasive issue of poverty within our communities. United by a shared vision of creating a world of equal opportunities, Hakili Community for Sustainable Development was born as a volunteer-run organization with a clear purpose.

Inspired by the universal idea of wisdom, encapsulated in the word “Hakili” across various African languages, our name reflects our belief in activating the hidden potential within marginalized and underserved communities.

Our story began in Calgary, Alberta, but our ambitions extend far beyond borders. We are a diverse team of passionate volunteers, pushed by a collective desire to break the cycle of inter-generational poverty worldwide.

Based on the wisdom of Dioula culture, where elders proclaim “hakili da yele” to emphasize the necessity of activating intelligence for one’s benefit, we try to awaken the potential within every individual. With critical thinking, knowledge, innovation, and financial literacy as our guiding principles, we work every single day to give more people the opportunity to succeed.

Together, we are building a community where empowerment, fairness, and empathy are the foundations to create a brighter, more inclusive world for generations to come, and we welcome you to become a part of this movement.
