Today is National Child Day

November 20, 2020 | 0 Comments

In Canada, we celebrate National Child Day on November 20 to recognize our country’s commitment to upholding the rights of children and the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1989. The CRC sets out the rights of children with 54 articles that provide us with a solid road map of what is needed to raise healthy and happy children and youth.

At the heart of respecting children’s rights is connection, which involves allowing children to be seen, heard, and valued in positive, nurturing relationships. With connection, children can also understand where they come from and develop a sense of belonging and identity. We must provide safe places where children can connect with caring peers and adults. This allows them to develop the strength to cope with considerable stressors and challenges. When their rights are not respected, children are at risk for toxic stress, hindered brain development, and negative physical and mental health outcomes later in life.

Changes in the community often have a negative impact on children, but children’s healthy development is vital to the future well-being of economies and the community. Many children in Alberta face poverty, bullying, discrimination, poor mental health, and abuse. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a crisis in children’s mental health and their rights to education, protection from violence, and access to play and recreation. A community that endorses children’s rights awareness and invests in healthy childhood development raises healthier and more engaged citizens.

We encourage you to learn about the rights of young people and to make plans to celebrate the day. We ask that you wear blue, follow us on social media at @Natlchildday and @NatChildDayYYC, and visit nationalchildday.ca
